Evaluation of my magazine

Evaluation for media coursework
For my media coursework, I decided to do the print task which involved creating a new music magazine which had to include a front cover, contents page and a double page spread. Everything included in the magazine for example the masthead, font, layout and lead-articles were all our own original thoughts that we put together in our group to make our final pieces.
When we were researching ideas for our final piece, we had many ideas of what we wanted to include for the final pieces, a few of the magazines we researched were ‘Q’, ‘Vibe’ and ‘NME’ our favourite one out of the three was ‘Q’ which is where we got some of our ideas from and changed them to suit our house style. ‘Q’ was the magazine which inspired us the most, because it is such a well known magazine and it’s really sophisticated and we didn’t want our magazine to come across as a tacky cheap magazine. Our magazine compares to ‘Q’ and other magazines by having bold pictures, consistent house style, and fonts a recognisable typography our image is the main focal point. It will fit in with the market because; it has the latest musicians, and festivals, and contains a variety of genres within the magazine, also it follows the codes and convention of a music magazine for example, music reviews, music news and interviews with music artists.
In our magazine ‘Select’, people represented in it are our feature artists, people who fit our genre which represents the month the issue is being published in. They are represented by classy bold photos. Our primary image and cover line would be an artist who is just either re-leasing a new song and album, so we would be helping them promote it.
‘Bauber’ would publish our magazine the reason why we have chosen this institution is because we found they also publish similar magazines, even though ours is much more diverse than many of the magazines In which they publish. Our magazine would be published in most supermarkets and newsagents, it would be a quite wide spread magazine and not just sold in speciality music magazine shops.
The audience for our music magazine ‘Select’ is 18-30 this is because the content of the magazine is very widespread, which is why we agreed that it would be suitable for such a large age group, as of all the features included in the magazine and because it covers so many genres of music, they should have a keen interest in music and the music industry. The readership of our magazine would be mainly men because I have aimed the images so men would be more attracted to the magazine. The purpose of our piece would to entertain and inform our readers this is because we would have articles, posters, which would be to entertain but then reviews and interviews which would be to inform. . The readership of the magazine is people who either study at university or have just started a new job after studying at university, also people who go to music gigs, festivals, and like to know what is happening within the music industry. There lifestyle would be quite an active lifestyle, they enjoy going to parties, and going out with friends on the weekend, also have in interest in fashion.

Our magazine would suit our audience by employing a formal register and tone. The house style of our magazine includes using the same font, same colours throughout the magazine, and each issue. We chose black, white and red because they are bold colours, these colours can conotate many things in which red could conotate love, black is related to power, because of them being bold colours they attract your audience easier because they can catch your eye. We also would attract our audience by our established primary image.
During my time in making this final production, I have found photo shop and paint.net need a lot of time and patience, for editing my photo’s I used photo shop but for creating my front cover I used paint.net as I did start off using photo shop but even through reading the help guide, I still couldn’t get to grips with it and I found paint.net more simple to use, even though I did take me a while to get use to it. For my contents and main article and did use publisher as I found with the other programmes, putting quite a lot of text in and in specific places I found quite difficult.
Looking back at my preliminary task I think my main production is a lot better, as for my preliminary I used just publisher whereas now I used paint.net, and edited photo’s on photo shop, I found that using different software makes your magazine look more realistic as you can edit and do a lot more with other software’s apart from the basic ones. When we were doing our preliminary then I tried using paint.net as well but I still found it difficult to use so because we didn’t have much time I used paint.net but because I had more time, and I had practised with it I managed to complete my final front cover on paint.net which I am pleased with.
